Job Purpose

1.    Delivery – Guide line management to deliver HSE policy, set the culture and manage hazards (45%) 
2.    Improvement – Act as a change agent for continuous improvement and a role model for compliance and commitment (20%) 
3.    Capability – Leverage HSE expertise to support own unit and others (15%)
4.    Strategy – Contribute to the HSE strategy beyond own unit (10%)
5.    People – Manage and develop direct reports (10%) 

Key Responsibilities

1.    Delivery – Guide line management to deliver HSE policy, set the culture and manage hazards (45%) 
Tasks: Guide Site Management Team and line management to develop and ensure implementation of HSE policies, plans and practices for the Warsaw Site in line with the AkzoNobel HSE Policy, Directives, Rules & Procedures (HSE Procedures) and in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements; together with and in support of line management, set the safety culture and manage hazards. 
Results : Established HSE management system  

2.    Improvement – Act as a change agent for continuous improvement and a role model for compliance and commitment (20%) 
Tasks: Be a change agent for continuous improvement in the HSE standards, performance, capability and culture of the Warsaw Site in line with the AkzoNobel programs (Safety Common Platform); along with line management, spend time on the shop floor and act as a role model for ensuring compliance with and commitment to the AkzoNobel HSE Policy, Directives, Rules & Procedures, including its risk tolerance criteria for People and Process Safety, Environmental, Health and Security.
Results: Progress towards leading level of HSE maturity

3.    Capability – Leverage HSE expertise to support own unit and others (15%)
Tasks: As a member of the Site Management Team, be an effective coach for the Warsaw Site by leveraging and extending its HSE knowledge through personal participation in AkzoNobel expert pools for delivery of the Safety Common Platform, HSE Faculty learning programs, auditing and/or incident investigation and/or through training activities within the Site as well as through personal functional development. 
Results: Act as a Subject Matter Expert in at least one HSE area

4.    Strategy – Contribute to the HSE strategy beyond own unit (10%)
Tasks: Contribute to the development of the HSE strategy for design, deployment and delivery of the AkzoNobel HSE Policy, Directives, Rules & Procedures and Safety Common Platform for the entity at the next higher level, in order to ensure alignment of objectives and performance of the Powder Coatings – Warsaw Operation.

5.    People – Develop HSE Capabilities at site level, support development of peers  (10%) 
Tasks: Attract, lead, coach and develop employee(s) in line with HR guidelines and HSE operating model, and facilitate talent management process.
Results: Employee is engaged, deployable (quantitative and qualitative) and capable of realizing the (department/team) objectives:

  • Ensuring that direct reports have the required HSE&S competencies as defined in the competency matrix prior to assigning them any routine or non-routine task. 
  • Only engaging on routine or non-routine HSE&S critical tasks after training and proper process confirmation of such competency.6.    Local Regulations 
    Tasks: Ensure the government’s regulations and guidelines being attended by the range of activities covered in Warsaw Operations considering employees, community relations, environmental and other stakeholders. Represent company when engaging with authorities.
    Results: Compliance with local regulations and permits.

Job Requirements

Essential educational qualifications, relevant experience and requested skills.

Qualifications/education: 

Bachelor’s degree in HSE or engineering or other related discipline.
Certifications such as CSP, CIH strongly desired. 
Work experience in a similar role within manufacturing/chemical industry is required. 
Knowledge and experience on chemical industry is preferred – involving dust explosion prevention.

Management/general skills: 

  • Strong strategic and conceptual skills with ability to execute and follow through; 
  • Positive influencing: ability to convince others, gain agreement or acceptance of plans, activities and ability to move others willingly towards a desired goal or course of action; 
  • Ability to drive continuous improvement of the processes, policies, standards; 
  • Able to work in an inclusive way in the HSE community to make sure the business experiences ‘one voice’ and the teams collective objectives are met;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, entrepreneurship, result oriented, negotiation, problem solving, project management, business acumen;
  • A second language (Spanish, Portuguese, French) desired;
  • Broad (people) management capabilities

Functional skills:

Broad and specialized knowledge of the AkzoNobel HSE functional role and HSE management systems and programs, as well as external benchmarks.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary range for this role is: $100,000 to $115,000. This is the range that we in good faith anticipate relying on when setting wages for this position. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This salary range may also be modified in the future.
