Job Purpose

This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations within the company’s global export control and sanctions framework by ensuring that controlled products are recognized, trading partners and upcoming shipment are screened, licenses are applied for and colleagues are trained.  The role holds a global export control and sanctions responsibility, a regional responsibility for the North and South America countries, to include compliance with United States legislation.  The position is a member of the Global Export Control team.

Key Accountabilities

  • Identify risks of violating laws and regulations relating to exports and denied parties, reporting risks to persons responsible in business and/or region.  Ensure appropriate actions are taken to mitigate the risks. Conduct annual risk assessment and evaluation of the effectiveness of the export control framework
  • Ensure all military and dual-use substances, materials and products and technology in the business are identified and classified. Maintain a classification registry. Organize identification and registration of substances, materials and products subject to other control regimes
  • Ensure export licenses are in place for the export of relevant substances, materials and products and technology in accordance with laws and regulations. Ensure licenses and related correspondence are adequately documented and maintained
  • Stay abreast of export control and sanction laws and regulations relevant to the business
  • Seek approval from Group Leader Export Controls in accordance with the Sensitive Country Guidelines as necessary. Review shipments flagged by AEB. Block shipments that are not permitted under sanction and export regulations and report the block immediately to Group Leader Export Controls if the block should be maintained
  • Ensure records relating to export of controlled products are kept in accordance with regulations and internal rules
  • Ensure new or modified products are classified and that Research and Development and Marketing understand the impact of development choices on export restrictions
  • Ensures that sales documentation is in line with export control requirements, e.g. license references
  • Ensure that for the sale of controlled products contracts and/or terms and conditions are in place with suitable export control provisions and End-use Statements as required
  • Periodically report to Group Leader Export Controls on the number and types of blocked shipments, number and types of licenses applied and denied, new products classified or classifications changed and risks and vulnerabilities in the export control framework

Level of Autonomy

The Export Control officer is authorized to:

  • establish the export control classification of items
  • block and unblock transactions
  • apply for export control licenses
  • investigate compliance risks
  • approve Sensitive Country customers according two pair of eyes principle in case of absence of Group Leader Export Controls 

Decisions on structural issues should be discussed with Group Leader Export Controls before implementation to establish a standard. The Export Control Officer can make independent decisions once a clear standard is set.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Trade Compliance, Legal, Marketing, Supply Chain or related field
  • 7 years’ experience in Trade Compliance, Legal, Marketing, Supply Chain, or related field.  Must have experience working in a global environment
  • 3 years’ experience in export control
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, able to work accurate and independently
  • Effective problem-solving skills.  Must be business and solution-oriented mindset 
  • Good interpersonal communication and influencing skills with the ability to network with internal businesses and functions.  Must commit to understanding the needs of stakeholders and continuous improvement
  • Must be able to work independently and with a team
