RD&I Technician I

Job Purpose

 

Within the Vilafranca Food, Caps & Closures and General Line (FCG) Packaging Coatings R&D team, this lab-based role involves incremental and new product development to serve customer needs, modifying existing formulations to meet market requirements, troubleshooting customer issues, providing manufacturing support and undertaking cost effectiveness programs. An aptitude for problem solving and good communication skills are essential.

Key Accountabilities

 

Objective 1 - Product development and optimization

 

  • Plan and organize work on a daily and weekly basis with oversight from senior team members.
  • Formulate, prepare, apply and test the mechanical and chemical properties of coatings using established test methods and procedures to complete Laboratory Work Requests (LWRs) within agreed timescales.
  • Give support to new product development if required with oversight from senior team members.
  • Record all results clearly and accurately, analyze data, draw conclusions
  • Develop knowledge of coating components, their function, chemistry and use, to build formulation expertise.
  • Work to optimize / develop products that are suitable for the customer and meet critical business requirements.

 

Objective 2 – Safety, Quality and Continuous Improvement

 

  • Contribute to AkzoNobel’s commitment to HSE excellence by taking an active part in the site’s Health and Safety initiatives, including 5S, Near-Miss Reporting and Behavioral Based Safety observations.
  • Ensure that all tasks are undertaken in compliance with the company’s quality and health, safety & environmental systems.
  • Commit to high quality work and continuous improvement.
  • Support the Team Leader to ensure the safe and efficient running of the lab.

 

 

Objective 3 – Interaction with other teams and functions

 

  • Share results with team leader and senior team members via team meetings, project reviews etc.
  • Communicate effectively with senior colleagues and Technical Business Partners to understand customer needs and deliver technical solutions to meet their requirements.
  • Work effectively with other key business functions as required.

  • Planning of daily and weekly work schedules following agreed priorities.
  • Formulation, preparation, application and testing of coatings agreed and defined with team leader.
  • Communication with senior team members and team leader.

Experience

 

Educated to graduate level or equivalent in a relevant science subject.

Excellent team working & proven ability of working to deadlines.

Good self-organization and tasks execution with rigor and precision

Ability to plan and carry out work programs in a methodical and logical manner.

Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write up and report test findings

Able to read and write satisfactory in English

Proven laboratory experience is an advantage.

An open, inquisitive approach to technical challenges, a willingness to learn and develop experience and an enthusiasm for problem solving.

Relevant experience of coatings, formulating and testing is an advantage.

Knowledge of polymer chemistry, principles and practice is an advantage.
