The Senior Research & Development Laboratory Technician will prepare, apply and evaluate paint or paint related materials to identify physical and chemical attributes for such purposes as product development, product maintenance, customer service and analysis by performing the following duties under light supervision and guidance.

Key Accountabilities

  • Carry out complex or specialized tasks in support of chemists and scientists. 
  • Know and observe company and location health and safety requirements. 
  • Follow established and specially adapted procedures. Develop new procedures to meet specialized 
  • or unique requirements. 
  • Plan and execute project assignments within the constraints of a research program or testing 
  • schedule. 
  • Prepare, modify, and monitors small batches for testing, development, and analysis. 
  • Prepare samples through established and specialized methods. Develop new methods to meet 
  • specialized or unique requirements. 
  • Evaluate samples of new and existing products for characteristics such as stability, durability, and 
  • physical or chemical properties. 
  • Judge panels to identify characteristics and defects as necessary. 
  • Provide technical assistance to Production, Sales, and Marketing in support of product scale-up, 
  • quality control, application testing, and other activities as necessary. 
  • Maintain detailed technical records in the form of Laboratory Notebooks. 
  • Provide detailed reporting in memo and spreadsheet formats. 
  • Maintain a well-stocked laboratory by taking inventory and monitoring raw material and product 
  • consumption. 
  • Able to train Technician I/II on working practices and procedures. 
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment in accordance of company safety rules to ensure 
  • compliance with federal, state, and local environments and safety regulations. 
  • Train Technicians and others on normal working practices and common procedures. 
  • Travel requirements are very light, typically 0-2 trips annually 
  • Participate in Special Teams including Safety, HSE, Housekeeping, etc. 
  • Perform additional duties as assigned and required

Job Requirements


  • Minimally, high school diploma or general education degree (GED). 
  • Prefer 1-2 years related college education or a college degree from an unrelated field. 


  • Typically more than 15 years of directly applicable experience 

Language Skills 

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions 
  • and procedure manuals. Ability to keep detailed records. Ability to write basic reports summarizing 
  • data and work results. 
  • Must be fluent in American English 

Mathematical Skills 

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts including proportions, percentages, fractions, and volumes. 
  • Ability to apply basic concepts of algebra and geometry. 

Computer Skills 

  • Minimally able to perform common tasks utilizing MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. 
  • Minimally able to perform basic tasks in SAP and Optiva. 
  • Prefer ability to utilize MS Word, Excel, and Outlook at a proficient level. 

Reasoning Ability 

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where 
  • only limited standardization exists. Ability to understand, interpret, and execute a variety of 
  • instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, and/or schedule formats. Ability to train others in 
  • specific procedures. Ability to organize and present data in graphical and tabular formats, propose 
  • project direction based on experience, knowledge of raw materials, application and customer requirements.

  • abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision. 

Color Aptitude 

  • Color aptitude scores of 60 or greater are typically required for new employees. Scores of 50 or greater may be accepted based on balance of experience and training.
