Job Purpose

AkzoNobel Coatings Inc. has a great opportunity for a R&D Scientist at our Troy, Michigan location.

The R&D Scientist position will develop technical strategies and the roadmaps through linking customer needs and market trends in line with AkzoNobel vision and strategy.  This is a global R&D support position and is able to utilize technical knowledge and experience to contribute toward the development of new technologies across AkzoNobel business units and is recognized internally and externally as an expert in the area of paints and coatings research. 

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide solutions for the technical challenges based on deep scientific knowledge 
  • Identify project needs and organize projects accordingly reporting results to the business
  • Identify opportunities for the technical innovations and translates them into R&DI strategy
  • Generates and manages IP strategy. Analyzes the 3d party IP.
  • Formulate and presents possible solution directions and issues 
  • Demonstrates comprehensive understanding of products and coating technologies
  • Understand impact of future drivers and applies this knowledge to the developments and improvement of the existing technologies
  • Stay abreast of the latest industry innovations and competitive trends
  • Functional guidance/supervision of a small team of researchers
  • Mentors, trains and coaches colleagues to build organization technical knowledge and expertise

Key Activities

  • Work independently on technical aspects of the technology projects by serving as the technical project lead
  • Contribute to AkzoNobel IP by interacting directly with AkzoNobel legal department
  • Interact with Universities and Government organizations as the AkzoNobel liaison
  • Represent AkzoNobel in the technical coalitions
  • Prepare technical project proposals


  • 13+ years of relevant experience with Master’s degree or  10+ years of relevant experience with PHD degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering



  • Market and Product insights, problem solving skills, design of the experiments, product formulating knowledge, knowledge of the polymer and organic chemistry, business and technical communication skills, computer skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, Microsoft Outlook, Formulation databases)
