Job Purpose

The Researcher II establishes new coatings chemistries and contributes to the realization of objectives of innovative developmental projects.  This role develops new and improves existing research methodology, in line with the global RD&I strategy.  The Researcher II will prepare, test, develop, analyze and research new coating formulations, crosslinking mechanisms, and resin chemistries. In this position you will serve as the technical or project lead for global research projects.  This position reports to Junior or Senior Scientist, Global Technology located in Troy, MI. 

Key Accountabilities

  • Identifies new opportunities, executes innovative scientific experiments and tests and translates results into practical applications.
  • Participates in the global projects and ensures execution and delivery of objectives.
  • Identifies project needs, set-up, plans, executes, analyzes, interprets results and reports on experiments.
  • Identifies new product/process optimization, technical solutions and innovation.
  • Keeps current on, uses, and improves relevant research methods in the field.
  • Ensures retention of knowledge through research reports.
  • With intellectual property (IP) counsel, manages & files IP applications and analyzes 3rd party IP.
  • Understands, develops and comments on technical strategy in own area of expertise.




Key Activities

  • Delivering results for Focus projects on time according to the time frame established by the project team and the steering committee.
  • Use, improve and implement new methodologies and tools.
  • Protection of AkzoNobel innovating technologies through the development of intellectual properties.

Education & Experience

Ph.D. in chemistry/chemical technology with minimum 3 years of experience in polymers/coatings or Master’s degree in chemistry/chemical technology and minimum 5 years of experience or Bachelor’s degree in chemistry/chemical technology and minimum 10 years of experience in polymers synthesis/coatings.
