The Lab Technician will be part of the R&D Support team for Color Matching for AkzoNobel North America.

  • Very accurate mixing of small amounts color samples needed for the formula development process. Formulations are prescribed by the Color Developers or coming from the Color DMS software
  • Mix bigger samples for customers, (application) testing, and other department usage. Thin down the weight samples to the right spraying viscosity using the right thinner and/or hardener
  • Accurate spraying with the correct guns, distance of the guns, programs, etc. of the mixed color samples on a spray robot. Hand application of primer panels in the right color and layer thickness so the Color Developers always have pre-primed panels on stock 
  • Paint stock maintenance for the color lab
  • Potentially ship out sprayed panels to customers
  • Developmental opportunity to learn solid color development and when proficient move further to effect colors
  • Developmental opportunity to approve colors for own level of color development.  Collaborates with an advanced color expert or group leader in case of doubts

Key Accountabilities

  • Interact with the Color Developers during Mixing & Application if the process is in question (wrong recipe amount, wrong spray program, toner info, hiding issues, right primer selection, etc)
  • Very good knowledge of preparation & application of samples following guidelines for all different products that are used within the department
  • Takes ownership of maintaining and calibrating Mixing & Application equipment
  • Ordering and storing, maintaining stock database with batch information, shelf life checks, toner quality control, refilling from gallons into liter cans 
  • Ordering non-paint material for the whole team.
  • Follow 5’s and safety rules. Ensures a safe and clean work environment
  • Participate in continuous improvement of department knowledge and efficiency

Key Activities

  • Learns to develops all type of colors (solids, effects, 3-coats) and work according set priorities
  • Can work with all color FD related software tools. Ensures they’re calibrated and operated correctly
  • Approve above mentioned color types by himself and for others of the same level 
  • Knows all processes and follows the guidelines for formula development
  • Works closely together with other R&D teams (product development, solutions, applications) to come to the required results for the customers 
  • Timings for mixing, spraying, ordering, etc. Prioritize and multi-task such that mixing & application never stops 
  • Collaborate with color developers on issues that occur during Mixing & Application
  • Collaborate with Color Developers in cases of capacity issues to make sure this process is continuous
  • Take ownership of corrective/check actions when something appears wrong in the used toners, spray guns, RX20 machines, etc
  • Advanced: Approve colors at his own level
  • Advanced: Communicate to color requesters what can be matched with normal toners and what will require special materials
  • Very accurate mixing and Application is crucial in the Color Development Process. Errors result in material waste and delayed customer delivery.  The result is missing the set due dates and/or unsatisfied customers
  • Maintain inventory control of paint stock which is critical to total process of Formula Development 
  • Needs to be able to adapt to different priority settings which are happening quite often
  • Pressure of getting more colors done in less time
  • Color approvals must ensure satisfied internal and external customers

Required Experience

  • College degree preferred
  • Attention to detail, proactive, hands on positive mentality with a strong drive for ownership and responsibility.
  • Able to adapt to rapidly changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Good math calculation and MS Office skills (Word, Excel).
  • Ability to work collaboratively and flexible as part of a team.
  • Fully comply with all safety, health and environmental guidelines according to site and company standards.
  • Color development experience a plus
  • Chemical background is a plus
  • Color software experience is a plus
