Position Summary:

The Chemist, Solution Lab Project Leader is responsible for coatings’ technology sold into the packaging marketplaces which can include beverage and food internal and external coatings. As a Chemist in R&D, you will work closely with the group lead and technical lead on various key business projects and support the day-to-day business needs of internal and external customers. In addition to managing multiple projects and tasks simultaneously while striving for better performance and problem resolution.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research, develop, analyze, maintain and improve existing and future products
  • Product formulation and knowledge of coatings fundamentals and raw materials.
  • Application and evaluation of packaging coatings through methods including but not limited to spray and draw down which will be used in various critical to quality tests.
  • Collaborates with R&D team members and commercial team regarding product formulation, application, scale up and trial support
  • Support scale up of products and process transfer to Huron and Columbus plant.
  • Participate in product trials at customer’s plants
  • Ability to handle interaction with: Customers, Sales, Quality Control, Production, and/or Suppliers.
  • Maintains detailed laboratory records and can translate data into clear, well-written technical reports and presentations
  • Promotes safety and environmental awareness by ensuring that standards, policies, and procedures are adhered to in compliance with corporate, federal, state, and local requirements
  • Ability to supervise technicians, entry-level chemists and temporary employees
  • Performs additional duties as required.

Education & Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with minimum 5 years of coatings industry experience
  • Experience in formulating Polyester, epoxy, acrylic, or urethane solvent and/or waterborne coatings
  • Self-starter; able to work on multiple task with minimal direction and strong capability in prioritizing workload based on continuous changing environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including technical report writing and presentation delivery
  • Highly organized both personally and in work area and adherence to 5S practices
  • Proven problem solving and critical thinking capabilities
  • Good interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a cohesive unit and independently with minimum to no supervision
  • Highly flexible and adaptable
  • High energy for a fast paced and dynamic environment
