Senior Regional Communication Business Partner, Government Relations

Job Purpose

A new Government Relations role will be created in our China organization. AkzoNobel pursues long term relationships with its stakeholders, including governments on all levels.

As part of the China Communications & Public Affairs team, this role will manage the Government Relation function in China, supporting the AkzoNobel business and its manufacturing operations. The Government Relations Manager will work together with a network / ecosystem of local AkzoNobel leaders, as well as with the Global Public Affairs team

Key Accountabilities

Develop and execute GR strategy, aligned with and supportive to the company’s business strategy in China, building and enhancing AkzoNobel’s reputation and perception among government stakeholders.

Build, manage and enable the China GR network / ecosystem, including the working procedures (aligned with GR and Global PA strategy).

Keeping informed on the (local) government agenda and policies, and drive opportunities for the company (e.g. incentives, subsidies).

Collaborate with internal leaders around sustainability related policies and identify business opportunities.

Leverage company membership of associations and other platforms (by participation and coordination of participation) (e.g. on industrial standards and entrance requirements).

Formulate and implement successful local government relations programs, especially in the provinces where the company has strong presence.

Engagement with government officers at different levels and develop engagement strategies/key messages for high-level local authorities’ interactions with government stakeholders.

Provide insights and counsel to senior AkzoNobel executives and create clear understanding of the major political / policy strategies that may impact or influence their work programs. For example:

Work together with the the Communications and Public Affairs team to build and expand strong networks with external stakeholders to positively influence AkzoNobel’s reputation. Also, support issue and crisis management activities.

Work together with the Global Public Affairs team. Translate global guidance to local context


8+ years significant experience with Government Relations / Public Affairs in multinational companies in China

Strong business acumen. Previous experience of working for related industry preferred.

A proven track record in China to improve the operating environment of an organization.

Experience of coordinating a government relations approach for a major corporation.

Ability to start building influencer relationships through new digital channels.

Good experience of implementing strong processes to drive performance across multiple teams.

Experience of advising senior executives on political strategies and building government relations.

Strong budget control and focus on driving value.

Demonstrable track record of managing issues and handling crises.

Fluency in Mandarin and English (native proficiency), with strong verbal and writing skills.

University or Master Degree
