Job Purpose

To develop, prepare, execute and analyze research elements (e.g.  problems, questions, ideas) in own discipline.

Develop new and improve existing research methodology, in line with the RD&I strategy, project and RD&I functional standards, in order to gain insight into new developments.

Drive the realization of objectives of innovative and/or developmental projects, meeting timelines and quality as set.

Key Accountabilities

Creative design of new products, formulations and test protocols in support of CE and Auto application development.

Effective management of multiple projects, ensuring clear alignment of goals and deliverables with business and market needs.

Close collaboration with global product and application development teams to ensure the projects are carried on in the right direction and meet with customer’s needs.

Sets-up, plans, executes, analyzes, interprets and reports experiments within own unit

Identifies new product/process optimization and technical solutions and new application opportunities for own area/domain and shares these with other professionals

Keeps currently used methods up to date and improves relevant research methods in the field, ensures retention of knowledge through research reports

Participates in, or leads projects and ensures execution and delivery of technical results

Formulates and presents solution directions and issues advice at request or at own initiative

Key Activities

Performs activities in cooperation with other departments (like procurement, marketing, operations, application research, PSRA, Technology) and research locations to support research activities

Occasional interaction with suppliers and customers.

Protection of AkzoNobel technologies (IP law, patent applications)

Functional guidance of technician / specialist level team members.

Able to develop, coach and support co-workers to continuous ensure deliverables and improve workforce

Ability to explain technical concepts in an accessible and compelling manner to improve collaborations and achieve outcomes

Functions as R&D representative in cross functional FOCUS project teams.

Maintains and promotes a safe work environment, complies with safety policies and procedures.

Follows safe work practices for personal and equipment safety, both in the laboratory and in the field. End results are zero or minimum safety incidents and aclean, orderly working environment

Works according to quality standards as set by Lab management (for example ISO 9001)


Academic education level (MSc or higher) in Chemistry, preferably Polymer Chemistry, Chemical engineering, Organic chemistry – or comparable experience / working level.

Research experience (>2 years) in R&D, more prefer work experience in inorganic material synthesis or waterborne coating formulation development in CE/Auto application fields.

Self-motivated individual with high level of technical curiosity is preferred.

Good team player and be able to work in a cross-functional team environment.

Good communication skills including written and verbal in Mandarin and English.
