Traineeship Continuous Improvement Engineer

Job Purpose

The CI Engineer is responsible for championing, developing and sustaining a culture of continuous improvement. The end purpose is to improve key performance indicators (Safety, OTIF, cost, material efficiency, quality, and inventories) of the site. The CI engineer drives improvement of site performance by leading or facilitating CI projects using Lean Six Sigma (L6S) capabilities.

The focus of improvement projects is on manufacturing and operations. While driving improvement projects, the role transfers L6S ways of working and analyzing problems, making decisions and setting standards to colleagues, in order to train on the job and develop and expand CI capabilities.

This position reports into the CI Manager who sets priorities together with the CI Engineer ensuring alignment with site priorities. The CI Engineer drives successful implementation of ALPS and ensures practical application on a daily basis.

 

1. Improves site performance

Supports and challenges the workforce while driving improvement projects directly linked to the site improvement priorities. Leads or facilitates projects such that effects can be  durable and sustained by the departments involved. The scope of these projects is typically involving multiple departments and requires support of stakeholder management, planning and communication. Ensures and safeguards compliance to ALPS operating framework (goals & targets, KPIs, operating processes, people). Contributes to the real result key performance indicators (a.o. Safety, OTIF, cost, material efficiency, quality, and inventories) of the site.
 

2. Builds CI capabilities

Deploys and sustains the ALPS capability and improvement program including a coaching support structure to drive CI initiatives and help ensure sustainability of improvements 
Champions, develops and sustains a culture of continuous improvement (CI) and knowledge about related methodologies/ activities (Lean, Six Sigma, ALPS) across all areas of the site with a strong focus on manufacturing and operations
Develops and expands local capabilities in applying continuous improvement tools and methods (Lean, Six Sigma) and promotes a structured problem-solving approach. Injects passion for this activity in the interaction with employees and showcases results and benefit of activities.
Coaches Practitioners and trainees on their projects on site and give reinforcement training where needed.
 

3. Supports the ALPS deployment on site

Drives the local ALPS implementation and build-up of required capabilities and help ensure ALPS full and successful implementation and practical application on a daily basis.
Responsible for creating implementation masterplans and successful execution of these within agreed timelines for the programs in scope. 
Network within the AkzoNobel CI community and shares insights, problems and opportunities to promote improved performance and problem-solving across the company as well as encourage others to do the same.
 

What do you bring?

Functional

  • Graduate with a Bachelor or Master's degree (degree related to technical, business or economics fields most applicable);
  • Affinity with technical / mechanical work and ideally have some prior experience in this field;
  • Strong analysis and problem-solving skills, able to identify and structure issues, run accurate (also statistical) analyses and synthesize recommendations;
  • Experience in continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, TPM;
  • Must be willing to train as an AkzoNobel continuous improvement expert;
  • Any other relevant experience in the fields such as plant operations, production, maintenance, logistics, (process) engineering, continuous improvement etc. is considered as a plus. 


General

  • Strong computer skills (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, SharePoint, JMP);
  • Fluent in Dutch and English, both verbal and written.
