Job Purpose

 

Decides on and drives the raw material portfolio simplification strategy of the diverse portfolio that makes up the RM category ‘Latex & Monomers’. The portfolio of Latex & Monomers is the technically and commercially a challenging portfolio (around 620 Raw Materials, 20% of AkzoNobel spend, >200 Manufacturers).
Is responsible for defining the strategy and roadmap towards an optimized category portfolio for Latex & Monomers through linking technical developments, customer needs and market trends in line with AkzoNobel vision and strategy. Is recognized internally across all businesses and externally in the industry with especially suppliers/manufacturers as an expert. Is able to utilize expert technical knowledge to maximize effect across businesses.
Is accountable for delivering sustainable advantages through initiating complexity reduction as well cost-saving programs for the combined Paint & Coatings business by functionally leading a team of raw material specialists gathered in the various Latex & Monomers Slate Expert Teams, thus driving the supply and procurement strategy for the Latex & Monomers raw material group. 
The decisions of this manager directly impact the work of all formulators in all businesses and have implications for all factories and regions of AkzoNobel. The underlying impact on the commercial activities of AkzoNobel are commensurate.
 

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Develops the technical strategy for the Latex & Monomers raw material portfolio.
  • Functionally leads raw material specialists involved in raw material groups (Slates) for Latex & Monomers.
  • Takes a global, Paints & Coatings view on Latex & Monomers portfolio by building and maintaining a network across Business Units.
  • Acts as gate keeper in raw material portfolio management for Latex & Monomers (introduction approvals, deletions, slate classifications).
  • Technical counterpart for sourcing category lead for Latex & Monomers.
  • Continuously drives implementation of potential alternatives, value engineering opportunities and “smart” opportunities to accelerate phase out of non-core materials.
  • Provides guidance and advices alternative solutions in case of supply contingency issues.
  • Drives a continuous effort to increase data quality and consistency in raw material slates.
  • Ensures protection of AkzoNobel IP/technologies.
  • Mentors, trains and coaches colleagues to build knowledge and expertise.
  • Gives input to the business and/or R&D strategy; translates this strategy into plans and initiatives for the development in the field of Latex & Monomers.

Experience

  • MSc or preferably PhD in technical / scientific background such as Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
  • In-depth understanding of latex technology, processes and raw materials used
  • Typically, >10 years experience in resin company preferably in the field of emulsion polymerization, having led multiple R&D projects
  • Experience with working internationally and with multiple disciplines (procurement, R&D, supply chain)
  • Ability to influence and motivate persons to getting things done beyond the hierarchical reporting lines
  • Strong affinity with change management and willingness to challenge the status-quo
  • Proven track record of providing solutions for technical challenges based on deep scientific knowledge and on profound understanding of customer needs.
