Internship at AkzoNobel; subjects for analytics 2021-2022

The analytical laboratory is part of the paint R&D department of AkzoNobel. It receives requests from various fields of R&D such as innovative product development, solutions to issues with current products, or from used paints at cars, aero plains etc. Most requests come from Sassenheim, but the laboratory is contacted by all R&D worldwide. Several topics can be done by the CPE students at the analytical laboratory of AkzoNobel at Sassenheim The Netherlands.

Within the analytical laboratory test method development is executed for setting up new ways of analysis of compounds or resins in products, but also reaction kinetics for drying of two-pack paint systems, databasing of reference materials with various techniques for better identification of paint raw materials. The analytical laboratory has the following analysis equipment: FTIR, FTIR-Microscopy, UV/VIS, NIR, NMR, XRF, UPLC, UPLC-qToF-MS, GPC, GC, GCMS, pyrolysis-GCMS, and microwave digestion GCMS/LCMS besides microscopic techniques. The following topics are of interest for 2021-2021:

  1. Make microwave digestion GCMS applicable for paint analysis by analyzing a number of polyesters, alkyds, amides and urethane resins and build a GCMS and NMR chemical shift database of the derived monomers.
  2. Execution of resin & paint polymer reverse-engineering work for determining monomer identification and quantification applying most mentioned analytical techniques.
  3. Help in running molar mass distributions by GPC and work on new test methods by UPLC for of GPC (APC) or GPC-tetra-detection.
  4. Other analytical requests for R&D, help in reaction kinetics, any problem from the market where the student can help in etc..
