Job purpose

The Physical Services laboratory offers specialized Physical related investigations and technical knowledge 
to support product development, compliant handling and executes specific physical related investigations for the (global) R&D laboratories, marketing and technical sales departments within AkzoNobel.

The Physical Lab Specialist is responsible for executing and delivering the required physical paint testings within the pre-agreed timelines, to both local and global (cross-BU) requestors. With his physical knowledge support can be delivered towards customers in helping to speed up new & incremental product development and complaint handling activities. Also reporting of test results, maintaining the state-of-the-art quality standards for the provided physical services and implementation of new physical methods is part the job activities. 


Specific tasks

  • Work closely with customers to determine project/business related needs and translate them into physical activities and/or method development requirements. Discuss project needs with R&D teams in terms of support, test set-ups and planning;
  • Execute request as per the standard methods as prescribed with the precision of quality and delivery on agreed time;
  • Communicate the results in forms of lab reports to the customers and be able to prepare technical reports, become partners in development;
  • Efficiently co-ordinate with team members and share initiatives;
  • Formulate and present possible solution directions and issue advice at request or at own initiative in order to improve/optimize on-going projects;
  • Conduct literature searches in the area of paint characterization and use the findings in new methodology development or solving various physical/mechanical (characterization) issues;
  • Read execute testing’s as per the standard OEM methods;
  • Present, discuss and report results in a constructive and effective manner;
  • Combine physical findings with the information obtained by other members of multi-disciplinary teams of various laboratories around the world;
  • Keep up with new developments in physical test methods and technologies of interest for paint related components and product;
  • Maintain safety and quality standards in all operations;
  • Work in accordance with QHSE guidelines;
  • Good working knowledge of MS Word and Excel, and the affinity to quickly learn and master internally used software packages;
  • Flexible with work execution and smart to priorities the request according to business needs;
  • Stress management.


Who are we looking for?


  • MSc degree in physical chemistry or BSc/HBO with at least 5 years of relevant experience, preferably in coatings research



  • Extensive knowledge of and hands-on experience in the area of paint related mechanical properties and various techniques on mechanical characterization;
  • Flexibility in using and learning about paint technology and other physical characterization techniques;
  • Good time management and communication skills necessary to effectively communicate with internal and external customers as well as the team on analysis plan set-up, results expectations and outcome, workload, timing, analysis issues and prioritization;
  • Adequate knowledge of paint technology;
  • Excellent reporting and presentation skills, both in English and Dutch;
  • Accurate, critical and result focused;
  • High safety awareness and a proactive approach with respect to laboratory safety, committed to quality and company HSE standards;
  • Pro-active and pragmatic self-starter, team player able to contribute to team targets and engagement;
  • Ability to think out of the box and a continuous drive to improve him or herself;
  • Capable to solve problems in above mentioned areas by taking appropriate actions timely.
