Lets paint a picture of the Microbiology Internship:

 

We are looking for an Intern to join the AkzoNobel Microbiology Expertise Group: Understanding microbial growth potential on paint dry films

 

AkzoNobel is a company that is developing and producing paints. Famous brands are Sikkens, Flexa and Hammerite. The Microbiology Expertise Group (MBEG) is taking care of the microbiological protection of paints and related materials. Wet paints can be deteriorated by bacteria in the can, and dry paint films can be overgrown by fungi and algae. The MBEG is researching ways to prevent this.

 

Project Aim:

  • Understand microbial growth on paint dry films.
  • Identify algae and fungi susceptibility under natural conditions (rain and sunlight exposure).
  • Prevent microbial growth in paint environments.

 

Internship Tasks:

  • Screen individual algae and fungi for growth potential on paint films.
  • Study combinations of individual microorganisms for growth on paint films.
  • Conduct growth studies on paint films with mono- and mixed-algal and -fungal cultures.
  • Utilise Techniques such as: Media and consumable preparation, Sample preparation (painting panels), Cultivation of fungi and algae in specific growth media,Quantification of fungal spores and algal cells (using culture-dependent microbiological methods), Microbial growth assessment on paint dry films.

 

Expected Outcomes:

  • Enhanced research aptitude and collaborative skills.
  • Exposure to an international research and industrial environment.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Support other microbiological lab-related projects.
  • Assist with general tasks as needed.

  • You are a student currently enrolled in Biology or Chemistry HBO Program within the Netherlands
  • You are available from September 2024 to June 2025 
  • You have a passion for research and like to work with Microorganisms in a lab setting
