Purpose of the job

The Analytical Chemistry Expert is responsible for executing and delivering required analytical services within pre-agreed timelines to both local and global (cross-BU) requestors to support new & incremental product development activities taking place locally and/or globally, and provide support to customers. Maintains state-of-the-art quality standards for the provided analytical services. 


Specific Tasks: 

  • Investigations of polymers as raw material and whole paint systems with various chromatographic type of analysis techniques such as GPC, GPEC, UPLC, HPLC-fractionation, UPLC-Q-ToF-MS, GCMS, TD-GCMS, and HS-GC supported by robotic sample treatment in-/off-line.
  • Typical analysis & research topics are molar mass distributions of polymers, branching & absolute mass of polymers, residual monomers, surfactants in water-borne resins, biocide analysis and degradation studies, polymer separation based on polarity, VOC analysis of interior coatings etc.
  • Development of new chromatography methodology & technology and drives innovation for innovative research on polymers and paints. 
  • Technical lead of all chromatography techniques.
  • Member of 1 or 2 project groups for technology paint & polymer development or development & solution laboratory (Technical) and Supervision of 1-3 students from HLO and universities
  • Some experience or knowledge in analytical techniques for identification of polymers and organic compounds by e.g. NMR, FTIR, NIR, XRF, and UV/VIS.
  • Discuss results and technical problems, new requests with employees from analytical laboratory, microscopy, physical laboratory and paint & polymer development laboratories.
  • Partner with local and global product development and solution teams as well as local operations in order to ensure that available resources are deployed in line with short and longer term business objectives.
  • Maintain and continuously expand knowledge and expertise within the group in the areas of anaytical science, including Design of Experiments (DoE) capability.
  • Ensures that the latest knowledge from within and outside company is used in order to improve processes and quality.
  • Will lead technical contact at internal/external customers and attend customer meetings and prepare and presents information for customer contact as appropriate.
  • Will use multiple techniques for requests & projects and derive the right results in conflicting situations.

What do you bring?

  • PhD in Chemistry (Analytical/Organic/Polymer) with 0-3 years of experience or Master Degree with 3-8 years of experience.
  • Good  track record of industrial experience in multinational organization in polymer and paints or at university in polymer & analytics. Profound knowledge in analytical science for polymer analysis especially chromatography techniques for polymers & volatiles
  • Ability to identify opportunities and/or translate internal customer demands into project/programs
  • Pro-active and pragmatic self-starter, result-oriented mindset
  • Ability to think differently and initiate, and manage change; continuous drive to improve him or herself as well as the team
  • Good knowledge of main office software (MS-Office) 
  • Able to communicate verbally and in writing in English and Dutch
