Job Purpose

The position is responsible for managing the scope, execution and delivery of medium to large sized cross-functional new product development and/or continuous improvement projects related to the R&D function. The R&D Project Leader defines the scope and develops the project plan, business case and tactical executional plan, in line with the R&D and/or business strategy, project management and functional standards ensuring a successful delivery of the expected project results within the agreed time frame, budget and scope. The successful candidate must constructively interact with worldwide personnel to facilitate a productive and efficient organization.

Key Accountabilities

  • Accountable for delivery of large or complex (sub)projects: 1-3 yrs time horizon / global impact / cross-functional in nature.
  • Defines and alignes project plan(s) including scope, milestones and deliverables; is accountable for execution and delivery within the agreed time, budget and scope.
  • Ensures end-to-end project management, incorporating relevant methodologies and tools, customer needs, intellectual property and knowledge development, using AkzoNobel project management standards.
  • Acts as a focal point and presents project progress, based on milestones/deliverables or exceptions to those on a regular basis to relevant stakeholders, including project sponsor, project steerco and/or gatekeepers.
  • Is the key contact for multiple and/or external stakeholders, ensuring proper stakeholder management and delivery of value for the internal and external customer.
  • Ensures that key project data is kept up-to-date in the respective project management tools (e.g. Focus) on a monthly basis.
  • Writes business case for projects, manages and plans relevant (departmental) budget and proactively manages the cost and acts in line with HSE and Compliance regulations.
  • Pro-actively manages the ambiguity and risk associated with the project(s) and ensures mitigation actions are in place and followed-up.
  • Pro-actively identifies and reports opportunities for improvement of the product development tools and process and acts as local process champion in the region.
  • Leads, coaches and appraises a team of indirect reports assigned to the project. Provides constructive feedback to hierarchical managers.
  • Sets objectives for project team members and provides clear, open and constructive feedback.
  • Creates an open environment in the project team where all people can perform at their best and ensures an engaged project team.
  • Elevates the project management mindset in the BU Powder, by setting the example and sharing best practices.



  • At least 10 years proven track record of industrial experience in multi-national organization
  • Thorough knowledge of the Paints and Coatings business requirements and operations
  • Extensive knowledge of key R&D processes
  • Extensive project management capabilities (incl. proven ability of (functionally) managing people and projects), result oriented and strategic thinker
  • Has been exposed to working and impacting globally
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in English at all levels and across all functions
  • Pro-active, pragmatic self-starter, high safety awareness
  • Ability to think differently and a continuous drive to improve him or herself as well as to inspire the organization



Preferably Technical educational in relevant field, e.g. chemistry, chemical technology, etc.

Typically +10 years of relevant experience with Bachelor’s Degree, or

Typically 7-9 years of relevant experience with Master’s Degree, or

Typically 4-6 years of relevant experience with PhD
