Job Purpose

The Process Technology Specialist is responsible for conducting research and laboratory experiments that support the manufacturing. This includes, but is not limited to, first-run development, raw material screening and study, in-plant color hits, studies and optimization of the manufacturing process, as well as aiding in the formula resolution of customer complaints, reduction of blocked, slow-moving or aged inventory. The Specialist strategize on effective methods to maximize the powder product's quality and efficiency, following safety regulations and legislation procedures. The successful candidate must have excellent organizational and critical-thinking skills, as well as having extensive knowledge of the scientific industry.

Key Accountabilities

  • Represent R&D and work effectively with cross-functional groups including but not limited to quality control, sales, marketing and supply chain.
  • Understand the purpose of formulation components and reformulate to solve straightforward customer (internal/external) problems with minimal supervision.
  • Provides technical guidance and data-driven insights to support diagnostics and resolution of issues in manufacturing, application, and formulation.
  • Clearly communicate using scientific process of hypothesis, method, results, initial conclusions.
  • Reviews products for production capability to reduce the amount of rework and rejected material.
  • Investigates quality problems to determine most probable cause and recommends appropriate corrective action to meet customer specifications in a timely manner.
  • Conform with all site and laboratory safety requirements and policies, including participation in AkzoNobel safety programs including audits, safety meetings, and demonstrating safe practices and behaviors.
  • Demonstrate continuous commitment to business goals and initiatives as sole contributor.
  • Maintain excellent relationships within the scope of their work.

Experience & Education

Educational level

  • Bachelor degree or higher in a laboratory science, preferably chemistry, materials science, or chemical engineering
  • 4+ years work experience in chemistry or coatings industry
  • Good knowledge of chemistry/polymers/formulation in coatings with previous hands-on experience


  • Very good understanding of powder coatings chemistries and raw materials, powder application, and powder manufacturing
  • Effective interpersonal skills, keeping direct manager and team members informed of key milestones
  • Experience working in other Functional areas (within powder) or other AkzoNobel BUs
  • Experience working within multi-cultural and international environment
  • Must be able and willing to travel
