Job Purpose

The Regional Controller position for Powder Coatings North America is the end responsible finance role within the regional Powder organization, covering the full regional Profit and Loss and acts as a senior business partner towards the Regional Director and Management team to drive business and financial objectives, interacting daily with the local team.  Will co-formulate a winning strategy, challenge, negotiate and translate into meaningful financial outcome (5 years) that meet profitability and operating cash flow.  Translate 5-year strategy into regional operating plan, yearly budget, and quarterly rolling forecast.    The regional scope encompasses revenues across multiple countries, sales organizations, production locations and multiple dedicated Powder legal entities across the region.

Key Accountabilities

  • Portfolio management – Competing to win, supporting complexity reduction, aligning external business developments with business plan
  • Play leading role in margin management. Actively challenges Pricing/Revenue Management and leads Cost control initiatives to improve margins in light of (raw material) cost and developments as well as market position
  • Validates and challenges business cases (for new project introductions, restructuring, investments etc.) in close cooperation with Sales, Marketing, Financial Planning and Analysis, Integrated Supply Chain, Accounting, Tax, Treasury and other stakeholders inside and outside the region.  As required, conducts adequate stakeholder management to obtain correct approvals for economically attractive business cases
  • Drives monthly performance against target and strategy and take pro-active measure, if required. Challenges assumptions and performance against market conditions. Formulates and actively drives commercial results growth, risks and opportunities while closing the gap actions highlighted in the Integrated Business Planning cycle
  • Responsibility for the Regional Profit and Loss and Operating Cash Flow delivery (including Operating Working Capital):
    • Understands all parts of the Profit and Loss including parts managed by other financial managers (e.g. cost of goods sold)
    • Ensures segment, product and customer profitability through pricing and mix, rebates as well as support and contract negotiation/compliance support
    • Identifies leakages in revenue, capital management and cost, pro-actively preparing proposals to solve
  • Key driver and linking point for all regional Merger and Acquisitions and business development activities (pipeline priority setting, business case, create synergy, prepare acquisition requests, coordinate approval process, Due Diligence, Integration)
  • Change agent leadership is needed. This is essential before, during and after a 3F transition
  • Post-3F transitional leadership with the ability to manage virtual teams, offsite cross pillar collaboration, monitor performance, ensure cross pillar performance gaps are addressed in a professional manner, celebrating successes
  • Inspiring the Finance team members and non-Finance stakeholders about our Fast-Forward Finance transformation
  • Strong operating expenses management and contingency planning to offset headwinds in Revenue or contribution margin
  • Benchmarks and challenges performance versus competition and internal peers (regions) 
  • Integrated Business Planning Role, specifically: 
    • Chairs Investor Relations review meeting in case there is a regional Investor Relations review
    • Active role in Demand Market Review 
    • Active role in Product Market Review when applicable 
    • Own the financial projection and analysis    
    • Champions one set of numbers
    • Evaluates and critiques the gap closing actions
  • Statutory and Compliance role:
    • Drives internal control process quality and compliance – drive improvement throughout the region
    • Connects regularly with Regional Accounting C to ensure business decisions and events are properly recorded in the financial statements and forecasts, while understanding the opportunities and risks that could occur 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Finance or Accounting.  Master of Science in Finance and Control (Registered Controller), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or Chartered Investment and Management Accountant preferred
  • 8+ years relevant work experience in Finance and Control in related business-to-business industry 
  • Has a stable view with the ability to challenge local members to achieve short and long-term financial targets 
  • Able to manage a virtual team and collaborate with offshore Global Business Services hub team leads to achieve objectives
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong people management and interpersonal and communication skills.  Ability to drive (cultural and organizational) change across different finance pillars and to challenge senior management on tactical decisions
  • Must be fluent in English
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.  Working knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning and Finance systems (SAP, Hyperion) 
  • Preference for experience in Six Sigma or Lean Methodology

Position Location

  • Position will be based at AkzoNobel's North America Corporate Headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee.
