Job Purpose

The Regional Commercial Controller position for North America will be responsible for the overall financial management of the North American Powder Coatings business.  Will work closely with the Regional Commercial Director and Commercial Management team to co-formulate and implement a winning strategy that meets profitability and operating cash flow objectives.  Translate 5-year strategy into regional operating plan, yearly budget, and quarterly rolling forecast.    

Key Accountabilities

  • Key member of the North American Powder Coatings management, working closely with the Regional Commercial Director and Sales Managers to drive business and financial objectives.  The regional scope encompasses revenues across multiple countries, sales organizations, production locations, and multiple powder coatings entities across the region
  • Responsibility for the Regional Profit and Loss and Operating Cash Flow delivery (including Operating Working Capital): 
    • Understands all parts of the Profit and Loss including parts managed by other financial managers (e.g. cost of goods sold)
    • Ensures segment, product and customer profitability through pricing and mix, rebates as well as support and contract negotiation/compliance support
    • Identifies leakages in revenue, capital management and cost, pro-actively preparing proposals to solve
  • Drives monthly performance against target and strategy and take pro-active measure, if required. Challenges assumptions and performance against market conditions. Formulates and actively drives commercial results growth, risks and opportunities while closing the gap actions highlighted in the Integrated Business Planning cycle
  • Strong operating expenses management and contingency planning to offset headwinds in Revenue or contribution margin
  • Benchmarks and challenges performance versus competition and internal peers (regions) 
  • Plays leading role in margin management. Actively challenges Pricing/Revenue Management and leads Cost control initiatives to improve margins in light of (raw material) cost and developments as well as market position
  • Key driver and linking point for all regional Merger and Acquisitions and business development activities (pipeline priority setting, business case, create synergy, prepare acquisition requests, coordinate approval process, Due Diligence, Integration)
  • Ability to manage virtual teams, offsite cross functional collaboration, monitor performance, ensure cross functional performance gaps are addressed in a professional manner, celebrating successes.  Change agent leadership is needed
  • Integrated Business Planning Role, specifically: 
    • Active role in Sales Demand Review 
    • Active role in Product Management Reviews
    • Own the financial projection and analysis    
    • Champions one set of numbers
    • Evaluates and critiques the gap closing actions
    • Advises on content and agenda for Monthly Business Review
  • Statutory and Compliance role:
    • Drives internal control process quality and compliance – drive improvement throughout the region
    • Connects regularly with Regional Accounting C to ensure business decisions and events are properly recorded in the financial statements and forecasts, while understanding the opportunities and risks that could occur 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science Finance or Accounting.  Master of Science in Finance and Control (Registered Controller), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or Chartered Investment and Management Accountant preferred
  • 8+ years relevant work experience in Finance and Control with proven experience in commercial finance in related business-to-business industry 
  • Has a stable view with the ability to challenge local members to achieve short and long-term financial targets 
  • Able to manage a virtual team and collaborate with offshore Global Business Services hub team leads to achieve objectives
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong people management and interpersonal and communication skills.  Ability to drive (cultural and organizational) change across different finance pillars and to challenge senior management on tactical decisions
  • Must be fluent in English
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.  Working knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning and Finance systems (SAP, Hyperion) 
  • Preference for experience in Six Sigma or Lean Methodology

Compensation Data

  • $140,000.00 - $178,000.00.  Eligible for annual bonus of 20%.

  • Position will be based at AkzoNobel's North America Corporate Headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee.
