Job Purpose

Manages the processes and team to ensure the products delivered to the customer meet the agreed quality standards.  Actively deploys the ALPS Quality Management System, assesses its adequacy and proactively improves it.  Actively monitors and drives efficiency improvements within the Quality Lab.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manages the processes related to the raw materials and final batch testing of all relevant products by using standard (quality) procedures to meet specifications
  • Coordinates all Quality Control resources to ensure internal and external customer needs are met
  • Ensures processes and standards are in place and followed by Quality Control hourly employees to ensure the number of batch adjustments/hits are kept to an optimal level.  Manages the escalation process if RFT and adjustments/hits go beyond a certain level
  • Promotes the quality system within the team, adhering to the elements and being familiar with the philosophy, quality statement, quality manual and procedures 
  • Ensures retained sample control and administration including related document collection, filing and disposal
  • Ensures that technical information is maintained and verification/ calibration procedures are in place
  • Liaises with Research, Development and Innovation to ensure New Product Introduction procedures are followed
  • Supports customer audits and internal audits, and ensures team works to the implemented quality standards and systems
  • Responsible for ensuring overall lab testing efficiency and established testing standards with continued alignment to the FIFO philosophy of prioritizing sample testing
  • Actively deploys ALPS foundations and ALPS Quality Management primary processes, with high priority. Promotes the quality philosophy throughout the organization by setting a positive example and positively participating in cross-functional problem-solving activities
  • Is familiar and complies with all the applicable corporate as well as site and laboratory policies/procedures with regard to personal conduct, HSE and Product Safety and Regulatory Affairs (PSRA) standards
  • Participates in inventory cycle count process with the Logistics Specialist and the Plant
  • Understands company goals, processes, procedures for advising employees on concerns and be able to direct the hourly employees in the right direction regarding general company information
  • Upholds company policy and company expectations with compliance and behavior that make a positive contribution to performance and operation of the business
  • Ability to embrace and champion the dynamics of constant change throughout the organization and operations
  • Maintains guidance to hourly employees and develop employees toward improved performance
  • Understands Collective bargaining agreement for union contract, remaining compliant with contract and managing employee issues or need for discipline per the collective bargaining agreement
  • Performs other duties as required by the Site Quality Manager for the success of Akzo Nobel Coatings Inc.

Level of Autonomy

This position will have a high degree of autonomy:

  • Make decisions related to batch adjustments, and raw material rejections
  • Will determine when to scrap a batch, how to adjust a batch and whether or not to use a raw material or reject. Supervisor will be submitting claims to suppliers.  Some of these decisions will have to be made quickly, some not so quick. Sometimes the call comes after hours, in the middle of the night 
  • Makes decisions related to Quality Control department staff, schedule, assignments
  • Makes decisions based on budget and financial spend.
  • Supervisor will be submitting proposals for capital equipment, managing the budget to include overtime and lab supply spend.  These decisions will be made in a short time due to need for proper vetting, especially for large purposes

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Engineering or equivalent work experience
  • 3-5 years’ experience in production/manufacturing/quality control
  • Knowledge of quality assurance lab activities and procedures.  Technical knowledge of coatings
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience
  • Must be customer focused and detail oriented
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team-oriented environment
  • Ability to work under pressure in a deadline driven environment 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and SAP
  • Must be fluent in English
