Job Purpose

To supervise all production processes and personnel while working with the Quality Assurance group to ensure that products produced meet standards and that production goals are met.  Responsible for managing the day-to-day aspects of running a shift as well as being a front-line resource for both information and action regarding the day-to-day items which affect daily performance. Actively monitors and drives efficiency improvements within Production.

Key Accountabilities

  • Managing the shift on a day-to-day basis
  • Responsible for taking an active improvement role on a day-to-day basis, including:
    • Ensuring that the daily production data is collected accurately on all machines
    • Understanding the top reasons for lost time, lost output, and poor quality and taking appropriate corrective actions.  Will provide information to the daily production meeting regarding the top reasons, their cause and what can/has been done to prevent reoccurrence.  Will take specific preventative action, ensuring that permanent fixes are in place
    • Transitioning information to the following shift supervisor via a shift hand over meeting
    • Addressing absenteeism, including vacation planning, by scheduling manpower as needed following collective bargaining agreement
    • Processing batch paperwork
    • Liaising with Quality Assurance sharing appropriate information to ensure department goals are met
  • Understand Collective bargaining agreement for union contract, stay compliant with contract and manage employee issues or need for discipline per the CBA.
  • Training, motivating, and supervising production operators who produce mixes, extrudate, and prepare finished milled products to ensure finished goods meet product specifications, and that proper records are maintained
  • Attending and participating in Powder Plant Programs/Committees/Training as required, such as Department Safety, Plant Safety, Behavioral Safety, Housekeeping Audit Teams, ISO, ALPS, Life Saving Rules or any other safety programs
  • Participating in the Powder Safety Journey. Adhere to the Golden Principle which is Simply to intervene to stop work if conditions or behavior are unsafe
  • Promoting health, safety and environmental regulations by ensuring that standards, policies, and procedures are adhered to in compliance with corporate, federal, state, and local requirements
  • Participate in inventory cycle count process with the Logistics Specialist and the Plant
  • Understand company goals, processes, procedures for advising employees on concerns and be able to direct the hourly employees in the right direction regarding general company information
  • Uphold company policy and company expectations with compliance and behavior that make a positive contribution to performance and operation of the business
  • Ability to embrace and champion the dynamics of constant change throughout the organization and operations
  • Maintain guidance to hourly employees and develop employees toward improved performance
  • Performs other duties as required for the success of Akzo Nobel Coatings Inc.

Level of Autonomy

  • Make decisions related to process adjustments, schedule adherence, and coordinates raw material deliveries from offsite warehouse
  • Manages the site during off hour shifts (2nd/3rd)
  • Makes decisions related to Production department staff, schedule, assignments
  • Makes decisions based on budget and financial spend.  Will submit requests for consumable

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience
  • 3-5 years’ experience in production/manufacturing/quality assurance
  • 3 years' prior supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of quality assurance lab activities and procedures; technical knowledge of coatings
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and SAP
  • Must be customer focused and detail-oriented
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team-oriented environment
  • Ability to work under pressure in a deadline driven environment 
  • Must be fluent in English
