AkzoNobel is seeking a highly motivated Environmental Specialist with 10+ years of experience to provide support our Environmental Liability Management (ELM) team in the Nashville, Tennessee office.  The selected candidate will manage a diverse array of impacted properties located throughout North and South America.  The typical portfolio includes soil & groundwater investigation and remediation projects for sites in state, provincial and federal clean-up programs. ELM also manages impacted soil and groundwater matters at active manufacturing sites and divested properties, and provides support with merger & acquisition (M&A) projects.

  • Manage impaired sites & environmental liabilities associated with owned or 3rd party sites by fulfilling obligations, minimizing costs and reducing risks
  • Facilitate environmental due diligence for acquisitions and divestitures by providing advice and recommendations to ELM, Corporate and Business Units
  • Negotiate with regulators and other stakeholders by creating cost-effective solutions which reduce future environmental risks
  • Interact with a variety of disciplines including legal; real estate; finance; engineering; health, safety & environment; procurement; and, communications
  • Assess contaminated property risks using a multi-disciplinary approach to resolve complex issues and facilitate effective exit strategies 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise in the assessment, investigation, design and execution of remediation projects with a focus on cost-effective and practical solutions
  • Negotiate with regulators and other stakeholders to deliver cost effective solutions for environmental liabilities
  • Manage investigation and cleanup actions in any of the following programs (or equivalent): Superfund (CERCLA), Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA), Brownfields and/or Underground Storage Tank Cleanup
  • Manage the selection of contractors, consultants and vendors for assigned projects – evaluate qualification, develop and assess bids and negotiate and control scope of work and costs.
  • Oversee contracts, budgets and schedules of assigned projects
  • Provide environmental management services such as due diligence, compliance, corrective action and environmental management systems

Position autonomy to manage, decide and support; 

  • Provide consultation or expert advice to management and Legal related to complex environmental risks of properties within own portfolio
  • Apply independent judgement in the selection and work assessment of vendors and consultants
  • Have authority to negotiate with local, state and/or federal agencies, consultants and vendors
  • Carry out major assignments of assessment, investigation, design and execution of remediation projects which involve significant resources and reputation risks
  • Interpret local, state, and federal laws and regulations involved in environmental remediation


Education & Experience

  • B.S. in Geological, Environmental or Civil Engineering, or Geology
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in managing large environmental investigation & remediation projects from strategy development to implementation to closure  
  • Professional registration (Professional Engineer/Professional Geologist)
  • Strong knowledge of laws and regulations involved in environmental remediation
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with involvement in preparing the following: Preliminary Assessment, Remedial Investigation, Feasibility Study, Remedial Design, Remedial Action, Risk Assessment, Brownfield Cleanup and Decision Documents
  • Ability to interact and influence peers, management, regulatory agencies, field personnel, technical staff, consultants and contractors
  • Maintain 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) or 8-hour Refresher certification
  • Must have the capacity to work independently and as part of a team
  • Travel requirements less than 20%
