Job Purpose

Evaluate and manage environmental risks associated with contaminated properties, ensuring effective strategies are implemented to minimize liabilities.  Oversee multiple investigation and remediation projects across various sites in the Americas, ensuring timely and successful completion in accordance with regulatory requirements. The typical portfolio includes investigation and remediation projects for sites involved in state, provincial, and federal clean-up programs.  Provide environmental expertise in support of real estate divestment and merger/acquisition activities, minimizing environmental liabilities. Ensure all projects and activities are conducted in compliance with state/provincial, and federal environmental regulations and guidelines.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert consultation and strategic advice to management and relevant departments (including legal), concerning complex environmental risk assessments and liability management across properties within the
    portfolio.
  • Oversee contracts, budgets, and schedules for assigned projects, ensuring that each phase progresses within stipulated timelines and financial constraints.
  • Offer advanced technical expertise in environmental site assessment, investigation/characterization, and  remediation, prioritizing cost-effective and pragmatic solutions.
  • Lead and execute significant assignments involving the assessment, investigation, design, and implementation of remediation projects, managing substantial resources and addressing high-stake reputation risks.
  • Expertly interpret and apply local, state, and federal laws and regulations relevant to environmental remediation, ensuring compliance and best practices are upheld throughout all project phases.
  • Effectively negotiate with regulatory bodies and key stakeholders to achieve cost-efficient resolutions for environmental liabilities to ensure compliance and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Lead the investigation and remediation processes within major regulatory programs including Superfund (CERCLA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Brownfields, and Underground Storage Tank Cleanup, ensuring thorough compliance and successful project outcomes.
  • Manage the selection process for contractors, consultants, and vendors for assigned projects. Assess qualifications, develop and evaluate bids, and negotiate scope of work and costs to align with project budgets and objectives.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry best practices and emerging technologies, identifying opportunities for process improvements within the Environmental Liability Management team.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Geology, or related field.
  • 10 years' experience managing environmental projects to include investigation and remediation efforts with a focus on soil and groundwater contamination.  Inhouse experience is a plus.
  • Professional registration such as Professional Engineer (PE) or Professional Geologist or ability to obtain registration within one (1) year of hire.
  • Ability to maintain 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) or 8-hour Refresher certification
  • Strong understanding of environmental laws and regulations at state, provincial, and federal levels.  Familiarity with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) a plus.
  • Proficiency in environmental risk assessment and management practices.
  • Experience with site assessment techniques and remediation technologies.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear and concise reports and presentations.  Must be able to communicate effective with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to interpret complex data and make informed decisions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.  Experience using Power BI and remediation management systems required.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% on an annual basis.

This position may be based at one of the following AkzoNobel locations.  This position may also be worked remotely with preference of the base location in New Jersey.

Rewards and Benefits

The salary range for these skills is $135,000.00 - $150,000.00 based upon experience.  This is the range that we in good faith anticipate relying on when setting wages for this position.  We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.  This salary range may also be modified in the future.
