Job Purpose

The R&D Technical Applications Center (TAC) manager is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the TAC in High Point, including the building and all equipment within. The TAC manager supports new product development by testing product candidates on industrial scale equipment, developing new applications processes when appropriate and providing impactful and timely feedback to R&D project leaders The TAC manager also supports the sales and technical service teams by conducting trials and demonstrations for customers.

Key Responsibilities

•   Maintains TAC equipment in a high degree of operational readiness
    o   Ensures SOPs exist for safe operation of the lab equipment
    o   Trains staff and maintains authorized user lists for the equipment
    o   Ensures that regular maintenance of the equipment is performed
    o   Ensures that stocks of consumables are maintained.
    o   Manage installation of new or replacement equipment
    o   Develops close working relationships with site engineering
•   Provide direct support to product development teams and the sales and technical service teams
    o   Assist product development by connecting formulation to application.
    o   Support product maintenance by evaluating impact of formulation changes.
    o   Provide demonstrations of new products to customers alongside of the sales team
    o   Assist technical service in troubleshooting customer application issues.
    o   Train lab and technical service staff in application principles and practice.
    o   Support investigations of customer application issues and quality issues
•   Maintain clean and organized work environment 
    o   Lead 5S program for the TAC
•   Lead continuous improvement efforts in the TAC
    o   Establish and own lab management processes for the TAC
    o   Participate in strategic planning process for the TAC

Job Requirements


1.    5 – 10 years of experience in industrially applied paints/coatings with specific experience on application equipment
2.    Bachelors degree or higher in chemistry, materials science, an engineering discipline, or equivalent

•    Conform with all site and laboratory safety requirements and policies, including participation in AkzoNobel safety programs including audits, safety meetings, and demonstrating safe practices and behaviors.    
•    Pragmatic, proactive, quick learner, self-motivated    
•    Understand both industrial finish systems application and industrial finish development in order to replicate performance of finish systems on customer lines. Provide timely and impactful feedback to technical service, solutions and product development teams around issues, quality and performance of AkzoNobel products.
•    Effective stakeholder management skills, including an understanding of appropriate communication to various stakeholder groups.
•    Maintain excellent cross-functional relationships to ensure delivery of objectives.
•    Has deep understanding of multiple industrial paint application methods, including how to adjust parameters to achieve high-quality results.
•    Experience in connecting paint formulation parameters to application parameters.
