Job Purpose

The role of a Technologist II is to support activities in one or more of the following areas: 
• Developing new products and technologies 
• Testing/support of existing products, processes and coating systems 
• Developing fundamental understanding of key coating attributes

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities for this role will include:

•    Testing/support of existing technologies, products and processes 
•    Developing fundamental understanding of key coating and technology attributes.
•    Manage the effective planning and day to day requirements for assigned projects and support activities. 
•    Understand drivers for work and has basic understanding of external customer requirements, asks questions to clarify where required
•    Uses best practice/past solutions to design, develop, carry-out, evaluate & interpret experiments for review with manager or senior colleague.
•    Contribute to test method development as needed, in order to better understand and evaluate coating properties and performance.
•    Effectively collate and report results, proposes conclusions and recommendations within agreed timescales using appropriate methods.
•    Plan, conduct and evaluate trials (e.g. application, production processes, equipment) as required.
•    Effective communication and liaison with others within the team, MPY RD&I, Technology Team and Marketing.
•    Prepare formulation/technology transfer packages e.g. into production environment as required.
•    Demonstrate an understanding of IP, legislative demands, standard products &/or technologies, including application and testing recommendations in pertinent fields.
•    Identifies improvement needs and suggests improvement activities/projects
•    Maintains a safe working environment eg member of 5S team & SAQ team, supports H&S audits, supporting BBS processes
 

Level of Autonomy

Conducts activity under general guidance and instruction.

Work prioritized regularly with manager or senior colleague.  

Has regular discussions on key next steps with manager, plans works program and project timelines.  

Manages own reporting through lab book and presents findings to stakeholder group.

Reports more complex pieces of work and generates lab reports.

Proposes conclusions, recommendations and next steps with guidance from manager or senior colleague. Contributes to formulation sign-off report.

Examples

1) Uses tools to manage and communicate activities / projects e.g. gantt charts under direction from line manager.  Is able to understand rationale behind plan(s) and implement them 

2) Plan multiple activities according to communicated priorities and agreed delivery timelines.

3) Results from lab work not as expected. Candidate expected to collate data and understand potential issues to discuss root cause with line manager before carrying out work.

4) Candidate expected to initiate discussions with known internal (within AkzoNobel) technology experts to overcome key challenges where the experience isn’t in the team. 
 
5) Factory support
• Completing batch supervision at global factories followed by associated first batch control testing.

6) VE
• Manufacture and QC of paint.
• Large scale manufacture and testing of paint, design of testing programmes with support from manager.
• Coordination of 3rd party application and testing programmes.
 

Job Requirements

BSc, Masters, PhD+. in chemistry (or related subject)
