The R&D Specialist will be part of the Product Support team for Coil & Extrusion Coatings group North America. This group supports production, sales, marketing, and technical service areas by way of performance testing, and analytical lab work.  Therefore, the candidate must be able to work effectively as part of a cross-functional team.  The candidate will contribute to the program through standard testing of coatings, data entry, sample preparation, and reporting of results.  The candidate will also help to manage a large panel inventory stored onsite in Columbus.  



Key Accountabilities

The R&D Specialist  must be highly organized, self-motivated and able to work independently, on a weekly work plan,  when given clear and distinct instruction.  R&D Specialist I must be able to communicate technical information clearly in both written and oral formats, as well as be able to draw conclusions from the data provided ,and keep up-to-date detailed records on all work underway. A successful candidate has a desire to seek and understand coatings fundamentals, including further understanding of performance and durability capabilities within the metal coatings industry.  Conform with all site and laboratory safety requirements and policies.


  • Support work with minimal supervision from the Analytical Technical Lead
  • Maintain all documents associated with the duties of a R&D Specialist 
  • Participate in a variety of interdepartmental initiatives
  • Create, support, and distribute reports with conclusions drawn from data analysis, both written and verbally 
  • Preparation and delivery of quarterly status presentations are required
  • Proactive with ISO regulations and 5S initiatives




  • Bachelors degree in a technical field preferred, ideally a laboratory science.
  • 0-3 years of experience in a laboratory work environment (degree) OR at least 5 years of laboratory experience (no degree)
  • Good knowledge of chemistry/polymers
  • Capability of integration in an international/multi-cultural environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication 


Preferred Skills:

  • Must demonstrate proficiency in basic algebra and statistics
  • Must demonstrate ability to communicate in both written and spoken English
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office Excel, PowerPoint, and Access programs
  • Effective interpersonal skills, keeping direct manager and team members informed of progress
  • Own personal and career development 
  • Demonstrate continuous commitment to business goals and initiatives as sole contributor


The Product Support group assists with production issue resolution therefore, an ability to work well under tight deadlines with minimal supervision is necessary.  The R&D Specialist I needs to possess solid computer skills, the ability to stand for long periods, and lift up to 50 pounds.
