Job Purpose

The IoT architect enables AkzoNobel to increase the adoption and the benefits from IoT solutions and prevents AkzoNobel from exposure to unmanaged risks.


The Solution Architect is responsible to translate requirements into solutions and describing it through architecture and designs. The architecture and designs are expected to be in line with business processes and architectural standards, guidelines & roadmaps.


The Solution Architect reports into one of the Domain leads in the Center of Expertise. The Center of Expertise IM is responsible for providing sustainable, efficient, robust and secured IT Cloud solutions. In addition, the team will be responsible to train, educate and ensure the right capabilities are available to meet the business project and major change needs. In addition, the CoE is responsible to match resource demand with supply, to ensure delivery of required resources and that target utilization rate of the resources is met.

Key Accountabilities

  • Make and maintain roadmap and drive development of the IoT solutions, in many areas including but not limited to Supply Chain, Sales and Distribution, Research & Development, etc.
  • Propose policies and standards for IoT solutions and build reference architectures for IoT solutions, including edge computing, data modelling, storage, processing, analytics
  • Assess risks (scalability, continuity, financial, security) of IoT solutions and define mitigations
  • Identify and promote opportunities for IoT based solutions to replace existing solutions or fulfil new (business) needs
  • Identify opportunities to reduce the Azure IoT consumption costs
  • Manage the IoT technology stack with its components and versions, and define  roadmap for replacing and upgrading components
  • Define analytics use cases and solutions with IoT data.


  • IoT implementations on Azure IoT 
  • Knowledge of IoT components (Edge Runtime, IoT Hub,  Event Hub, Time Series Insights and SignalR)
  • Knowledge of infrastructure components supporting IoT solutions (networks, firewall, edge computing)
  • Knowledge of Operational Technology and Industrial Control Systems (e.g. SCADA and PLC)
  • Master/ Bachelor degree in business management, computer science, computer engineering, or a related field of study
  • Around 10 years of experience in the IT sector in general and with more than 5 years experience in the respective technical domain, expressing deep and broad knowledge of architecture, IT security, (technology) platforms and business processes for the specific technical domain and with (comparable) business environments
  • Solid technical solution architecture experience with modeling and/or infrastructure / application architecture design frameworks (TOGAF), tools, technologies, methodologies
  • Knowledge and practical skills in best practice solutions in the shared solutions space
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, Operational Technology, Internet of things solutions and relevant technological developments in the respective technical domain
  • Experience with consulting or business roles.
