The Sustainability Counsel is a trusted advisor for AkzoNobel Leadership, providing strategic advice, legal and compliance insights and end-to-end legal support in the further development, execution and assurance of the AkzoNobel’s Sustainability Agenda.

The Sustainability Counsel leads the Global Sustainability Legal Expert Group and drives the Global and EMEA Sustainability Legal Agenda. The Sustainability Counsel furthermore plays an essential role in the Sustainability Council and related AkzoNobel forums, such as the Raw Material Sustainability Group. 

The Sustainability Counsel will safeguard the strategic objectives of AkzoNobel and will have a key involvement in issues and decisions with a significant sustainability and a significant financial impact for the businesses and for AkzoNobel as a whole, delivering know-how to AkzoNobel Leadership and businesses in way that has a transformative impact on AkzoNobel. The Sustainability Counsel will furthermore deliver impactful advice on HSE matters, in cooperation with the Sr. HSE/PSRA Legal Counsel.

The role of Sustainability Counsel is a pivotal role in the assurance that AkzoNobel is and will remain the Sustainability leader in the Paints & Coatings Industry.


Key responsibilities

• Be the Global Legal Focal Point in Sustainability law for AkzoNobel Leadership and businesses;
• Lead the Global Sustainability legal expert group, manage the development of Sustainability law expertise of the members of the Global Sustainability legal expert group, allocate workload and matters to the regional Sustainability legal experts in the most efficient way to limit exposure to risk and to reach for opportunities;
• Represent the Legal Function in the AkzoNobel Sustainability Council and other related Councils, such as the Raw Material Sustainability Group, as well as Global Sustainability driven projects and workstreams; 
• Pro-actively inform AkzoNobel of and contribute to the preparation for climate litigation trends;
• Pro-actively draft, circulate and embed legal guidance notes on new legislation, guidance notes with regard to green claim regimes, and guide the commercial legal counsels on these topics to assure company-wide compliance;
• Assure that the AkzoNobel Sustainability Agenda is reflected in the AkzoNobel Third Party Screening Process and our Business Partner KPI’s that relate to sustainability targets and their execution;
• Assure that the AkzoNobel Sustainability Agenda is reflected in M&A Projects, Sustainability Cooperation Projects and in our Annual Report and other external communications;
• Provide pro- and reactive advice to the HSE and PSRA-teams in consultation with the Senior HSE/PSRA Legal Counsel;
• Manage and direct outside counsel.

What do you bring?


• European qualified lawyer with a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience in energy and climate law at a law firm of international reputation and/or at a legal department of a large multinational company, preferably in the chemical or energy industry;
• Proven experience interacting with and leading professionals;
• Substantive knowledge of energy and climate law in the EEA Region and the UK, and of the global sustainability legislative landscape in general;
• Substantive knowledge of Sustainability-related developments in the EEA Region and the UK;
• Substantive experience with HSE and preferably as well the PSRA legal landscape;
• Excellent analytical, counseling, negotiating, communicating and interpersonal skills with sound legal and ethical judgment;
• Excellent in strategic writing and in drafting texts such as position papers and guidance notes;
• Experience in people management is preferred;
• Ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team of business personnel, legal and other internal experts and external consultants;
• Ability to identify legal and compliance risks and opportunities and to define mitigating actions;
• Ability to initiate constructive actions to improve process effectiveness;
• Proven experience working in teams with multiple nationalities;
• Highly developed integrity and diversity and inclusion awareness.
