Job Purpose

AkzoNobel seeks to fill a Senior Legal Counsel Health, Safety, Environment and Product Regulatory position to join the legal team in the headquarters in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. 

The Senior Legal Counsel HSE and Product Regulatory advises AkzoNobel on Health, Safety, Environmental and Product Regulatory matters and will lead the global HSE and PR Legal Expert Group. The Senior Legal Counsel HSE and PR will play an instrumental role in securing HSE and PSRA compliance and in pro-actively informing and advising on developments in the regulatory landscape. 


  • Lead the Global HSE and Product Regulatory Legal Expert Group;
  • Provide legal advice to all operating AkzoNobel businesses on HSE and Product Regulatory issues, including HSE legislative compliance, operating permits and  product labelling and registration;
  • Provide legal advice in relation to HSE incidents and investigations, as well as in relation to Product Regulatory investigations;
  • Provide legal advice to, and closely cooperate with, the AkzoNobel environmental specialists responsible for legacy sites and third-party sites;
  • Provide legal advice on HSE and Product Regulatory issues that arise in the context of buying and selling businesses including identifying potential liabilities and drafting relevant provisions of sale and purchase agreements to minimize risk.
  • Participate with HSE, PSRA, business and other stakeholders in the continuous implementation, training and improvement of Product Stewardship and in optimizing regulatory compliance tools and processes into our organization;
  • In close cooperation with the Akzonobel Sustainability experts, cooperate in the execution of the AkzoNobel Sustainability agenda;
  • Monitor HSE and Product Regulatory laws and regulations and educate legal and business colleagues on the developments in the fast-changing regulatory landscape;
  • Select legal service providers and make sure that services are of quality and represent value for money.



  • Lawyer, qualified in one or more EU member states and/or the UK, with a 7 to 10 years of relevant work experience at a law firm of international reputation and/or at a legal department of a Fortune 500 company.
  • First rate knowledge of HSE and Product Regulatory laws and regulations in the EU. Familiarity with comparable laws and regulations in other parts of the world would have a strong preference.  
  • Top-level analytical, counseling, negotiating, communication and interpersonal skills with sound legal and ethical judgment.
  • Advanced in contracting excellence, drafting and strategic writing.
  • Ability to work with a multidisciplinary team of business personnel, internal and external legal and technical consultants and to coordinate negotiations with government agencies and private parties.
  • Identifies legal and compliance risks, defines mitigating actions, plans and executes actions.
  • Generates constructive actions to improve process effectiveness.
  • Intermediate level of project management skills.
  • Excellent sense of work prioritization and able to work autonomously when necessary.
