Job Purpose

The Senior Employment Counsel is an experienced, qualified legal professional with substantial knowledge of employment and labour relation laws in the broadest sense. You will act as the most senior employment subject matter expert at the headquarters of the Company and as such act as the legal business partner on global and strategic HR and employment matters and initiatives. You will handle employment matters independently and interact with senior business and functional management and HR Business Partners and Directors. You will work with 1 peer employment lawyer based in the Netherlands form part of a larger commercial legal team of 20 people across EMEA. You will report to the Director Legal EMEA who is also based in the Netherlands

Key responsibilities

  • Advises on employment law aspects of strategic transformation and restructuring projects, M&A transactions and outsourcings projects and drafts and negotiates relevant provisions in contracts;
  • Advises on requirements and procedures with works councils and trade unions, both national and international;
  • Advises on the design and implementation of global HR initiatives, policies, rules and procedures
  • Advises on operational employment matters including in relation to individual employment contracts and collective labour agreements, employee performance, reintegration and termination of employment and on HR policies;
  • Leads the global employment law expert group (EEG) and sets, implements and executes strategy and operational plan for the EEG in line with the strategy of the AkzoNobel Legal Group and the Company as a whole;
  • Legal representative in the Life Savings Rules Steering Committee;
  • Advises on pension law related matters;
  • Monitors, communicates and acts on developments in employment law (including providing training);
  • Manages and directs outside counsel and manages legal spending regarding employment matters.

What do you bring?

We are looking for someone with a master’s degree Legal with minimum of 12 years’ experience at an (inter)national law firm and/or at a multinational corporation. In-house experience is preferred.
You have excellent knowledge of employment and labor relation laws and regulations in the Netherlands; basic knowledge of employment laws and regulations in other jurisdictions is preferred. Next to that you have excellent analytical, counselling, communication and interpersonal skills with sound legal, ethical and commercial judgment. You are a proactive professional used to work with senior executives. You have an excellent capability to quickly prioritize issues and manage your workload accordingly, by taking a risk/value-based approach with excellent drafting skills and are used to work independent.
You have excellent English language skills, spoken and written.
