Job Purpose


The Digital Innovation manager leads the digital innovation strategy within Infromation Management (IM), inspires the function on new technologies, supports building capabilities and enables the innovation process across the function. 

In this role the Digital Innovation manager continuously monitors the strategic direction of the organization and translates these insights into the present and future IT innovation roadmap to stay relevant and future-proof. 

The Digital Innovation Manager also builds a strong eco-system with strategic and value-driven partners to enable digital innovation within AkzoNobel. Also monitors the portfolio of innovation initiatives and projects within IM, acts as a linking pin for other innovation managers across the organization and focuses on enabling digital innovation. 

The Digital Innovation Manager reports into the Agile Transformation and Digital Innovation Manager in the CIO Office which is responsible for planning, driving and controlling the entire IT function to world-class standards and policies regarding digital innovation, agility, risk management, (information) security & compliance, enterprise architecture, project management, functional excellence and continuous improvement. 

Key Accountabilities


The Digital Innovation Manager is responsible to lead the innovation catalyst strategy within the IM function to enable the business in accelerating the value creation. Focuses on inspiring, assessing current initiatives, managing the innovation portfolio, mobilizing employees to action and building capabilities. Also makes sure the innovation process is properly embedded and implemented within IM. 


Strategy and Intent

  • Has a clear vision for Digital innovation within the IM function, specially to enable the function to become a digital catalyst;
  • Defines business focus and objectives for innovation management and specifically for the strategic priorities defined;
  • Identifies and maintains sponsorship for digital innovation in general within IM; 
  • Creates and maintains a multi-year roadmap for implementation; 
  • Monitors, manages and takes the lead (for pre-agreed projects) in the implementation of the digital  innovation portfolio within IM;
  • Understands and advises on the key digital building blocks needed to develop solutions on the digital space. 


Processes and practices

  • Understands and mobilize the resources needed to get buy in and execute on the digital portfolio within IM; 
  • Defines processes for digital innovation and aligns, when possible, with existing processes within the broader AkzoNobel;
  • Embeds, leverages tools, measures and improves the digital innovation processes.


Culture and People

  • Leads the development of IM digital innovation strategy, proactively communicates to key stakeholders and acts as an ambassador for all employees; 
  • Provides direction in process design and implementation within IM;
  • Inspires and evangelizes the value and need for digital innovation within the function;
  • Leads the development of the Digital curriculum to upskill IM, senior leaders and all employees in digital technologies;
  • Organizes events within AkzoNobel to inspire in digital capabilities: hackathons, meetups, trends, a.o. 


Organization and partnerships

  • Chairs the IM innovation board; 
  • Monitors and leads, when relevant, the roadmap of projects and initiatives to help AN become a Digital Catalyst; 
  • Builds the innovation ecosystem through strategic vendors and fit-for-purpose partners to enable and accelerate digital innovation;
  • Coordinates and leverages innovation networks within AkzoNobel including: Information Management (CoE’s, BIM, CIOO, GBS), Business and functions together with external parties: start-ups, universities and research agencies;
  • Connects to other innovation teams in the organization (e.g. RD&I, Color, ecommerce, manufacturing part of AN digital tribe) to strengthen, collaborate and co-create digital solutions.  



  • Master degree with a strong focus on IT Innovation Management or Digital Business;
  • Proven experience with successfully implementing transformative innovations in corporates within IT environments;
  • Agile, strategic and inspirational creative leader with strong influencing skills based on competency and delivery;
  • Proven track record of working with external organizations and building partnerships and/or new business;
  • Experienced in developing and implementing digital innovation projects;
  • Demonstrated experience in building digital solutions and in understanding the key digital building blocks needed to get to those solutions;
  • Has a good understanding of the digital architectural building blocks (front and back end);
  • Demonstrated ability to act autonomously;
  • Proficiency in English.
