Interaction and strategy

The handling of these cases within AIS calls for the multi-facing awareness of a claims specialist who can act as Global Process Owner by interacting with a wide variety of internal partners and external parties. The same person should also have the ability to add real value to our business by strategizing claims along with the lead carrier in order to ensure a successful resolution. If your profile matches the demands of this high-level opportunity, we encourage you to read further.

Provide expert management for international claims

You will join a team of six people, two of whom are based in the US in order to focus a.o. on US and Canada claims (there is a functional  reporting line from US for US claims on global insurance programs). Within the Insurance Department, you assume responsibility for the daily management of claims in all global insurance policies. The majority of claims generally relate to -alleged- product liability.

In order to achieve this you:

  • Build and maintain a network of stakeholders/partners including (internal) AkzoNobel business units (BUs), Legal, Finance, Supply Chain, Sourcing, and HSE, and (external) outside law firms, insurers, loss adjusters, peers;
  • Define and formalize the claims strategy together with the lead carrier and internal and external stakeholders;
  • Ensure  all stakeholders are aligned and  every claim is financially forecasted, provisioned for and reported accurately (soft forecasting process);
  • Review the documentation  written / provided by international lawyers and other legal professionals;
  • Assume ultimate responsibility for settling or closing incl all financial aspects of payment.

All of this demands the highest levels of organizational sensitivity in terms of stakeholder- and relationship management. As such it is essential that you know how to operate within a matrix and multicultural international arena. You also need to have an understanding of international finance, as claims will be settled in the countries where the actual damage occurred . Moreover, you must be prepared to leave your desk in order to meet with lawyers and other parties, and you should be willing and able to travel when required (± 5 times a year) mainly within Europe but sometimes further afield.

Do you have what it takes to succeed in this role?

This is a position for candidates with a positive and proactive approach who also bring a sociable sensitivity to different cultures and settings. At the same time you have learned to balance the drive for professionalism with the need to build good relationships.

A Dutch legal background is preferred as insurance policies are often drawn up under Dutch legal jurisdiction. You are expected to work in Amsterdam for three days a week and from home for two days a week, a situation that will also pertain post-COVID.

You should also bring the following attributes:

  • Academic degree (Master Legal, LLM) and minimum of three to five years qualified experience in an international insurance and/or legal environment. Experience in product liability and/or claims handling is preferred;
  • The strong interpersonal skills that enable you to act as a strategic partner for the BU and to work in a multidisciplinary team;
  • The advanced communication skills necessary to create the trust needed both from the insurance market and AkzoNobel;
  • Team player and leader with the ability to achieve the best possible result, often under pressure;
  • Fluent in English, with other language(s) of value, particularly Dutch.

A career defining opportunity

This role represents an exciting opportunity to enhance your profile across a challenging legal landscape. Although the number of claims is relatively oversee able they are invariably, complex and long-term cases that involve sophisticated fine tuning. You will enjoy a high degree of autonomy with a company that has its own captive (inhouse insurance company) and operates its own internal insurance companies.

Other benefits include:

  • A competitive compensation package;
  • 30 days of annual leave;
  • Travel expenses, a good pension plan and access to our collective medical insurance;
  • A laptop and mobile phone;
  • Variable profit sharing, depending on our operational result.
