Purpose of the job

This role will play an important part in showcasing our purpose; pioneering a world of possibilities to bring surfaces to life, to our external stakeholders.

Reporting to the Director of External Communications & Public Affairs and collaborating with the Head of Global Public Affairs, this role is responsible for leading and coordinating a global public affairs strategy that supports AkzoNobel’s business and reputational objectives. This strategic planning activity forms 25% of the role.

The Public Affairs Manager will also play a leading role in representing AkzoNobel’s interests in key industry groups and associations, cascading messages to relevant business leaders to ensure alignment. This activity forms 15% of the role.

In addition, this person will coordinate AkzoNobel’s approach to the development of partnerships with key stakeholders (NGOs, authorities, local governments, industry consortiums, etc.) to support AkzoNobel’s business and reputational objectives. This activity forms 25% of the role.

The Public Affairs Manager will provide counsel to business leaders on key commercial and reputational risks and opportunities, and will provide external messaging (including position papers) to senior leaders in the field of policy and government relations. This activity forms 20% of the role.

This role will also manage a system for analyzing political and societal trends and managing critical issues that have an impact on AkzoNobel’s business and reputation. This issues management activity forms 15% of the role.

The Public Affairs Manager will be the linking pin in the organization to establish a network of experts (from within the business and the regions) who will represent AkzoNobel in several countries and trade associations.

Key responsibilities

  • Contribute to and implement a public affairs strategy to support AkzoNobel’s key commercial and reputational objectives.
  • Drive the public affairs strategy in the Netherlands and Europe, and coordinate the global approach to public affairs.
  • Liaise with national and regional governments, and regulators on business related policy issues.
  • Manage a system for issues, policies and stakeholder monitoring.
  • Provide strategic counsel and leadership to senior AkzoNobel executives in the field of policy and government relations.
  • Build and expand strong networks with external stakeholders to positively influence AkzoNobel’s reputation.
  • Communicate internally to align narrative and provide colleagues with a clear understanding of the major political strategies that may impact or influence their work programs.
  • Represent AkzoNobel’s key interests before national government, regional governments and industry bodies.
  • Analyze political and societal trends and developments relevant to the business.
  • Implementation of the strategic approach to stakeholder and issues monitoring.
  • Pro-actively pursue defined stakeholders (NGOs, authorities, local governments, industry consortiums, etc.).
  • Representing AkzoNobel in key industry groups.
  • Setting of KPIs and targets for specific campaigns.
  • Provision of public affairs advice to business leaders.
  • Identification of opportunities and risks that can benefit or harm AkzoNobel’s reputation.
     

What do you bring?

  • 7+ years Public Affairs experience including operating in a complex regulatory environment.
  • A proven track record of shaping the regulatory / policy landscape in the Netherlands and Europe to improve the operating environment of an organization.
  • Experience in global affairs approach for a major corporation.
  • A strong network and relationships in national government(s) and the industry influencer environment.
  • Experience of identifying and building influencer relationships through new digital channels.
  • Good experience of implementing strong processes to drive performance across multiple teams.
  • Experience of advising senior executives on political strategies and building government relations.
  • Strong budget control and focus on driving value.
  • Demonstrable track record of managing issues and handling crises.
  • Fluency in Dutch and English (native proficiency), with strong verbal and writing skills.
  • Master degree in communications, journalism, marketing, business or similar studies is required.
