The role and responsibilities

Contracting Lawyer

For our Legal and Contracting Excellence team, we are looking for an enthusiastic colleague with passion for contracts. In this role you will be part of a dynamic, small but growing team of 5 colleagues working closely with other IP and Commercial lawyers in the Legal Function. You will be working in an international and innovative environment. We are a hard-working, devoted team where there is also lots of room to have fun. 

You will be a member of the (to be created) Contracting Center of Excellence (CoE), a functionally diverse team with the goal of increasing global contracting excellence throughout AkzoNobel. You will contribute to the design and implementation of an enterprise wide contracting strategy, support with the creation of contracting templates and playbooks, the building of a clause library, creation of new templates / clauses, implementation and testing of new technical (software) solutions, the set-up of a first line of legal support and the deployment of the ‘Get Contracting Right’ program. You will shape your role in the CoE as new processes and technology solutions are developed and implemented.

You will also work closely with the businesses to negotiate and draft agreements. The focus of contracting work will be on IP agreements, however you may also support with non-IP agreements. IP agreements include  government funded research agreements, sponsorship agreements, commercial agreements with IP clauses, consultancy agreements, contract research agreements, IP joint ownership Agreements, patent non-assert agreements, intercompany IP licenses, and non-disclosure agreements and non-analysis Agreements.

You will also educate business colleagues on AkzoNobel’s Contracting standards and process, provide basic IP agreement awareness and agreement governance as well as training the legal first line of support of the CoE.

What do you bring?

  • At least 5 years of relevant working experience at a law firm or a multi-national corporation. 
  • A Master of Law, with emphasis on contract law and intellectual property.
  • Knowledge of contract law and experience with drafting, reviewing and negotiating a range of agreements with focus on Intellectual Property. 
  • A good understanding of the end-to-end contracting process as well as the role legal plays in it.
  • Good analytical, counseling, negotiating, communication and interpersonal skills with sound legal and ethical judgment with the ability to work as a team member across the region and the world and be part of a cross-functional team.
  • Fluent in English (both written and spoken).
  • A self-starter and out-of-the-box thinker with strong personal and professional ethics. 
  • IT literate, digitally savvy with an inquisitive mind and a desire to continuously improve processes and develop, implement and use (legal) technology solutions.
