Job Purpose

This role heads up communications for the Benelux region, responsible for strengthening AkzoNobel’s reputation, brands, and organization:

  • Promote the company strategy and purpose, champion AkzoNobel’s reputation, engage employees and position AkzoNobel as an industry frontrunner;
  • Plan, manage and deliver effective communications to engage key audiences in the major markets of the Netherlands and Belgium;
  • Implement global campaigns effectively and act as a strategic business partner for BU and function leaders in the region including senior stakeholders located at our headquarters in Amsterdam;
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to deliver an effective public affairs strategy, based on specific risks and opportunities;
  • Lead communications for complex reputational issues (for example related to major organizational changes, CLA agreements, changes to pension arrangements etc.);
  • Manage the communications response for local crises / emergencies in the Netherlands and Belgium;
  • Be a senior member of the EMEA communications team driving the communications strategy and helping the function to meet its business-driven objectives. 

Key Accountabilities

As Communications Manager:

  • Develop and implement a communications strategy for the Benelux supporting businesses and functions in the region;
  • Act as a strategic communications business partner and trusted advisor to senior leaders, build strong working relationships and execute global and local communication plans that support key business objectives;
  • Implement communication tactics to inform, educate and engage audiences around AkzoNobel’s purpose, strategy, and behaviors;
  • Positively drive AkzoNobel’s reputation through fully integrated communication tactics aligned with the company strategy;
  • Proactively build and expand strong networks with external stakeholders (journalists, trade associations, government, NGOs) to positively influence AkzoNobel’s reputation;
  • Identify opportunities and risks that can benefit or harm AkzoNobel’s reputation;
  • Implement communications strategies to manage key reputational issues; 
  • Lead the communications response for local crises / emergencies in the Netherlands and Belgium, acting as first line of contact for media (when necessary) and monitoring and analyzing media coverage;
  • Track the outputs and deliverables of all communication activity across the region and measure progress against KPIs;
  • Provide insight and regular feedback as a key senior member of the EMEA communications team;
  • Coordinate and facilitate crisis training and media training for senior leaders/potential spokespeople.



  • 10+ years of experience within a global organization;
  • Fluent in Dutch and English language; both written and verbal;
  • Excellent communication skills; 
  • Master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, business or similar.


Desired experience:


  • Experience partnering and influencing senior stakeholders at the highest level;
  • Proven track record in developing communications collateral;
  • Understanding of both traditional and digital communication channels;
  • Experience in matrix organizations with multiple business units/markets.
